Vote three times, vote this week

February 24, 2011

University of Leeds Ballot paperMembers will have received three sets of ballot papers recently. It’s important to vote – whatever your response – and vote ¬†quickly.

The three ballots concern:

Our local dispute

We are particularly concerned over the threat of redundancies in the Centre for Joint Honours and the Faculty of Biological Sciences. The union has received notice that puts over 1000 jobs under the umbrella of possible redundancy. We have reflected the concerns of our members at Leeds that managerialism is beginning to fail at Leeds, and have demanded the withdrawal of plans to rank individual staff against one another. At the centre of our dispute is a string of failures to honour the details in the March 2010 agreement which brought our last local dispute to and end. Amongst these, is the failure to agree School constitutions that would have created better consultation structures for the ongoing reviews.

Our national dispute over pay and job security (follow the link for details)

Our national dispute over pensions (follow the link for details)

We strongly recommend voting ‘yes’ to all questions in all three ballots.

We got a great agreement last March; both UCU and the VC were proud of it, as I recall. A great shame that it is not being followed – and the experiences of the “displaced” staff in FBS back this up (blog post 28th Jan). From the management blogs (sorry to external readers if these are restricted viewing) I often wonder if the VC is being told what is really happening.

Nobody *wants* to strike – we’ve all got better things to do with our lives, like world-class research and inspirational teaching. Even in difficult times, all of us want help place our University up there with the best. But if it takes the *threat* of strike action to make the management side follow the March 2010 agreement, then there is only one course of action with regard to the ballot for the local dispute. Fill your ballot paper in, get it returned a.s.a.p.

Remember – the “restructuring” of other departments across the University has already begun. When it’s your turn to be “displaced”, you need to know that the agreement will be honoured.
