Joint NUS/UCU action

December 3, 2010

UCU alongside the NUS are in the process of planning protests at every HE and FE institution in the UK on Wednesday 8 December.  On  Thursday 9 December, together the two unions are to hold a mass lobby of members of parliament at Westminster followed by a candlelit vigil in the evening.

Update on the specific details of the Westminster protest will be sent direct to members in the next few days. Watch this space and the NUS-backed http://occupiedleeds.wordpress.com/ and http://www.leedsuniversityunion.org.uk/ for details of local campaigns.

In addition to the tuition fees debate, UCU and NUS have this week taken the initiative in a joint union campaign to save the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) with the other education unions. We are also concerned about the proposals to remove public funding for the teaching of Arts, Humanities and Social Science at university will, if implemented, lead to a massive reduction in provision with a consequent impact on members’ jobs.
