What is a real emergency?

November 24, 2010

Two days ago, staff of the University of Leeds were encouraged to contact security in the event of a student occupation today:

“If your department is disrupted by an occupation, sit-in or other demonstration, you should contact Security immediately on (0113 343 2222)”

emergencies onlyThis telephone number is the university’s emergency security number. According to the university phone book, this number is only  to be used for Fire, Police or Ambulance. In other words, it is the campus equivalent of 999.

So, rather than being advised to use the ordinary security number, staff are being advised to treat any student protest as some kind of emergency!

Let’s hope a real life-threatening emergency doesn’t take place on campus at the time of any occupation, as people might risk finding the emergency line blocked with people informing the University that students are congregating in a place of learning in a non-scheduled manner!

Lack of perspective?

Hurry up John, there are students in the lecture theatre
