UCU iPhone/iPad and Kindle e-book: USS Pensions Consultation
Leeds UCU today publishes a document that addresses some of the key concerns surrounding the current ‘consultation’ over the proposed changes to our USS pensions scheme. These have been written and formatted to be read on e-readers such as the iPad and Kindle, but will work equally well on iPhone/iPod Touch, Sony e-reader and the Blackberry (download the Kindle edition for non-Apple devices).
Download the e-book here and install and sync the usual way using iTunes (for Apple devices) or USB upload. Users of the free Stanza app on iPad/iPhone can simply email themselves the file and click on the attachment from Mail in their device to upload the book into Stanza.
These e-books are free to re-distribute, of course.
DOWNLOADS:
UCUUSSipad.epub – iPad edition file for Apple devices, and others that accept the epub format
UCUUSSkindle.mobi – Kindle edition file for the Kindle, and other devices that accept the mobi format
ussucu.pdf – for those who wish to see the content of the e-book, but don’t have an e-reader
I thought (and hope!) that the proposed 5% cap on the index linking applies only to the part of your pension that results from contributions made after March 2011. If this is so, could it be made clear in the document, please.
Thanks Robert
We can’t republish a book as a result of every comment we get, but, yes, that is our understanding too, and hope that to be the case.
Our booklets are given on the assumption they will be read in parallel with the ‘consultation’ material supplied by the employers. They do not serve to outline the details of the employers’ proposals, but to respond to them.
with regards
The Leeds UCU document says on page 8,
“Unlike under the current final-salary arrangements, the employers’ proposals under CARE make no provision for the automatic payment of a lump sum at retirement.”
This seems to conflict with what the USS employer consultation document at http://www.ussconsultation.co.uk/newsletter.pdf which says on page 10:-
“The new section is to provide secure, defined benefits that
are similar to those provided under a career average revalued
earnings (‘CARE’) formula.
The benefits under the new section, would be a pension of
1/80th and a lump sum of 3/80ths of salary for each year.
Each year’s accrued pension and lump sum would be
revalued every 1 April, up to retirement or leaving the
scheme.”
Thanks Robert. What we say is true, , the employers’ proposals under CARE make no provision for the automatic payment of a lump sum at retirement. They do make provision for the payment of a lump sum at retirement, as you say, but they don’t make provision for the automatic payment of a lump sum at retirement
