Defend Jobs, Defend Education – Leeds UCU rally
YOUR SUPPORT is needed NOW at the University of Leeds!
*What YOU can do*: There will be a regional rally and demonstration THIS Thursday 4 March in order to recognise the determination and strength of all members at Leeds. It will also be an opportunity for you to show your support for colleagues at Leeds as the talks continue and forms part of the national union’s ‘Defend jobs, defend education’ campaign.
The rally will start at 1pm in the Victoria Gardens, Leeds central (the paved area in front of Leeds City Art Gallery)(see map). Speakers include UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt and UCU President, Alastair Hunter alongside Leeds UCU Officers and local MPs. Please make every effort to attend, bring your colleagues, your friends and family and bring your banners!
Information about Victoria Gardens can be found here:
As you will know, just last week, UCU members at the University of Leeds voted overwhelmingly to suspend scheduled strike action following a significant breakthrough in 11th hour talks with the university management.
Following intensive talks as the strike day loomed heavily over the proceedings, management finally agreed that the threat of immediate compulsory redundancy would be lifted in FBS and the union was able to report that the two sides were close to a ground-breaking agreement that would reshape the way the university organisation manages organisational change. Following an extension granted by the university, industrial action plans were suspended for four weeks to allow the two sides to finalise discussions on this new agreement. This result is a tribute to members’ determination to take united action in defence of jobs and education and the result sends a clear message to the sector as a whole. You can read more from the union’s press release here:
Now the talks are at a crucial stage and your demonstrative support will be essential in helping us in our campaign defend jobs and defend education.
Many thanks for your support.
