What’s next at Leeds?

March 1, 2010

The suspension of strikes last week was met with a collective sense of achievement across campus last week from union members, supportive staff and students. This was achieved thanks to an agreement with the University over a number of issues which had been under dispute since November 2009. The UCU and the University management are continuing to meet under the auspices of ACAS now to flesh out the details of the agreement. Discussions on organisational change and governance issues are to take place, as well as discussion on the nature of the restructuring of the Faculty of Biological Sciences. We don’t anticipate any major complications in these talks – the University of course are aware of the strength of resolve amongst our members – and the huge reputational damage that any backslide on agreements already negotiated would cause. However, we must acknowledge that our negotiators still have a huge task ahead with some detailed and complex discussions still to be had.

The Leeds Student newspaper reported on the action last week with a brief article (Strikes Suspended) and an interview with a member of FBS staff (click here)
