UCU comment on student loans fiasco
Mark Taylor-Batty gave an interview alongside two School of English students to Look North on Friday. The BBC locally were interested to discuss the impact on local businesses of the failure of the Student Loan Company to get money and paperwork to needy students. As the report shows, the impact on traders has been significant. We at Leeds UCU are concerned about the impact on local traders that removing £35M from the local economy will also have, something the University itself has not considered. To date the university has done no assessment of the damage to the community that their plans to remove hundreds of salaries might have in terms of the effect on local businesses.
The directors of the SLC this year paid themselves tens of thousands of pounds in bonuses, despite the catastrophic level of errors. The UCU response to this was published here.
