UNISON now also in dispute with University
A second campus trade union, UNISON, is now in dispute with the University, alongside UCU. Members of UNISON voted unanimously at their recent Emergency General Meeting to oppose compulsory redundancies and support the national campaign to defend Higher Education. After taking legal advice, our sister union lodged a grievance with the University, stating that the ‘economies exercise’ is inconsistent with section 188A of the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidated) Act (1992) which places statutory requirements upon the employer to engage with the recognised trade unions (i.e. UCU, UNISON and UNITE). UCU agree with UNISON that the announcement and commencement of the ‘economies exercise’ at Leeds was potentially unlawful, given the requirements of that act of parliament.
