‘Sheriff of Nottingham’ funding model proposed by our VC may reduce UK’s research productivity

Michael Arthur, The VC at the University if Leeds and Chair of the Russell Group, has called for the dropping of the policy of funding excellent research wherever it is found. This has been met with anger and derision around the country, as detailed in an article today in the Times Higher Education. A suitable rejoinder, also published today, comes in the correspondence pages of Nature, in which David Currie of the University of Ottawa demonstrates how further concentration of funds amongst an elite of universities can lead to net reduced output:
